If you’ve gone out to use your garage door and it’s not working, presuming you have a sectional garage door as to a roller door, you should be able to clearly see one to three springs sitting above the door. The springs should all be in one piece ( refer to picture). if you see the spring into pieces, this is a clear indication that the spring has snapped and broken and will need replacement.
If everything looks ok, you could get a ladder and have a look at the top of the spring just to double-check. If the springs are all in good working order, we would then suggest diagnosing the motor. If your spring is in two pieces then you will need to call us for a garage door spring repair & replacement.
Our recommendation is No, you should not use the door until it is repaired. Opening the door could cause further problems such as cable damage. If it is an emergency, a garage door will still work with a broken spring if care is taken. If the rollers and hinges are all intact the door can be manually lifted. To do this, pull the manual release cord. This will disconnect the door from the motor and it can now be manually lifted. Because the springs do the majority of the lifting of the garage door, it will feel heavy to lift. We recommend though do not use the door and call us straight away.
Garage door Springs come in dozens of grades and lengths. Many factors need to be considered –
Is the door a single garage door or a double garage door! Some garage doors have one spring, some have two springs and some have three springs. These factors will determine a final confirmed price to fix and repair your garage door. Please note, we will always recommend both springs be replaced as it is more likely in the near future that the older currently working springs may break eventually.
Replacing garage door springs is a very time-consuming job a garage door technician can do. It involves releasing the tension on the other currently working springs, Removing the cables and cable drums and pulling down the torsion pole. The garage will need to be completely cleared as the torsion pole is nearly the full width of the garage. Once the torsion pole is on the ground, we can then remove the old springs and replace them with the new springs. Everything then needs to be reinstalled tested and checked, plus the springs need to be re-tensioned.
Again prices will vary depending on the garage door manufacturer/ brand and number but we would recommend allowing $395 to $510 for a typical garage door spring repair.
As per the above note, garage door springs are quite difficult to replace. We would consider replacing garage door springs as one of the higher-skilled areas a garage door technician needs to have. If you do wish to attempt to replace a spring we would strongly recommend a focus on safety and purchasing the correct tools. There are many step by step instruction manuals on how to replace your spring to your garage door. we would estimate a DIY effort would take 3 hours.
Technically yes you can replace just one spring if you need to keep the price down. There would though be different stress on the torsion pole as there would be an old and new spring on either side. It is not recommended and as a company, we will always recommend both springs are replaced. The old spring is more than likely to break in the next couple of years and for the very small cost to put the second spring on it is seriously not worth messing around.
